Sofie Kleppner – RUA Co-PI, Stanford University
Sofie R. Kleppner, Assistant Vice Provost & Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs, Stanford University
RUA Affiliation: Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of the Sanford University RUA National Science Foundation (NSF) AGEP grant
What is your field of study and why did you choose it?
My PhD is in Neuroscience. I chose that field because it is interdisciplinary and the brain is fascinating. I now work in Academic Administration because supporting postdoctoral scholars is a clear way to ensure a sustainable academy and develop emerging scientists as they change the world.
Why did you choose to participate in RUA activities?
Higher Ed is at risk largely because it has not valued a diverse and inclusive professoriate. RUA is aimed at supporting and developing historically excluded students and postdocs, with the goal of diversifying the professoriate. Our combined resources and experiences are ideally poised to pursue this goal.
What do you find most beneficial about your participation in RUA?
Working together with a dedicated group of colleagues who bring their individual perspectives to address our challenges.
What advice do you have for graduate students or postdocs?
Think deeply about where you want to go, what you need to get there, and how you can meet those needs. Ask for guidance and support that will help you along your way.
What’s one thing that you think everyone should read?
Draft No. 4 by John McPhee – writing is thinking and is critical for career growth and success. Draft No. 4 addresses writer’s block – a common challenge.
